The Cry of HR and the Damage They Cause

Writer: Szilvia OlahSzilvia Olah

Who is supervising HR? Is HR running your company to the ground? Are they ruining your company's reputation?

I often see posts about how hard HR is, but I see it differently. Experts don't find things hard. Anything becomes difficult when we lack the right skills, knowledge, resources, and tools - not just HR.

On the other hand, trying to master everything also makes things hard because no one can be competent in everything. The good news? HR has specialized functions designed to handle complex issues that require real expertise.

I know employment relations professionals who thrive on difficult cases. Why? Because they’re experts in employment/labor law. For them, challenges aren’t overwhelming - they’re engaging. Experts don’t find things hard they enjoy the challenge.

Unfortunately, many organizations have replaced expertise with generalists who do a little bit of everything but not exceptionally well. That’s not HR's fault.

HR isn’t hard - it’s complex. That’s why sub-functions exist and should be led by experts, not spread thin across generalists.

So if you find things hard just go back to the list and ask:

- Do I have the right skill and knowledge?

- Do I have the right tools, resources, and structure?

and change things so you don't have to struggle. Life/HR is easy but we make it more difficult than it should be.

Here is a video where I address both HR and business leaders. Enjoy!
